Plants exhibiting aphid damage can have a variety of symptoms, such as decreased growth rates, yellowing, stunted growth, curled leaves, browning, wilting, low yields and death. The removal of sap from the phloem vessels in plants creates a lack of vigor in the plant. Aphids consume an excess of sap to satisfy their nutritional requirements. The excess is expelled as “honeydew”. The coating of plants with honeydew can contribute to the spread of fungi which can damage plants. Honeydew produced by aphids has been observed to reduce the effectiveness of fungicides as well. Aphid saliva is toxic to plants. Aphids frequently transmit disease-causing organisms like plant viruses to their hosts. Once aphid numbers are high and they have begun to distort and curl leaves they will shelter inside hiding from insecticides or natural enemies. - [Rhizosphaera Needlecast](https://shadylanetreecare.com/rhizosphaera_needlecast/): With a hand lens, you can see rows of black specks on the needles, where the pycnidia have emerged through the stomates of the needles. These black fruiting bodies are diagnostic of infection by Rhizosphaera. Healthy needles have white stomates. The fungus lives inside the needle tissue, producing pycnidia that emerge through the stomates. Spores are released throughout the growing season during wet weather. Symptoms usually appear in the lower part of the tree first and progress upward. Older inner needles show symptoms first. Needles may first develop yellow or red speckles or blotches before turning brown or purple. Needles drop off the tree. Most infection occurs on mature needles in May and June during wet weather. - [Apple Scab Disease](https://shadylanetreecare.com/apple-scab/): Crabapples and apple vary widely in their resistance to scab. The young caterpillars quickly gather at a major branch fork and begin to build a web from which they exit to feed on newly opened leaves. Larvae spin a fine strand of silk wherever they go. As the caterpillars grow, so does the size of the tent. When populations are large, whole trees become covered with webbing and all leaves are devoured. - [Fall Webworm](https://shadylanetreecare.com/fall_webworm/): HOSTS;The favourite hosts of the Fall Webworm include Walnut, Cherry, Hickory, Crabapple and Birch trees. The Covid 19 Pandemic, a 2 month drought and the defoliation of thousands of trees throughout York Region. - [TAR SPOT(Rhytisma acerinum)](https://shadylanetreecare.com/tar-spots-blog-post/): Host Trees; Norway, Silver, Red, Mountain, Manitoba, Bigleaf and Sugar maples, Life Cycle;Emerged leaves are infected in spring during cool, wet weather. This fungus is found mostly on Norway Maple trees and causes large spots, up to nearly an inch in diameter. As maple leaves develop to full size, light to yellowish green spots develop in the infected areas of the leaves. The area becomes yellow, with numerous small, raised black spots forming within the yellow area. As late summer and early fall approaches, the black spots coalesce to form a large, irregular, shiny raised spot with the appearance of wet tar, called a stroma. Severely infected leaves may fall prematurely. How it’s Spread; In early Spring, sticky spores are released from fruiting bodies on disease maple leaves lying on the ground, and travel in the air to developing maple leaves. Within a month or two, light green spots develop on infected leaves. The tarlike spots don’t appear until late summer of fall. After overwintering, the tarlike lesions on fallen leaves produce sexual spores that infect young maple leaves and continue the cycle of infection for another season. Management; There are no registered fungicides in Ontario to control this disease. In recent years, tar spot caused by Rhytisma acerinum has been increasing in frequency and severity in Ontario. The fungus overwinters on fallen, diseased maple leaves. Rake up and destroy maple leaves in autumn to reduce the amount of inoculum for the following spring. In the home landscape, raking up fallen leaves may be sufficient to manage the disease. Removing fallen leaves from all infected neighbourhood trees may not be practical but may help reduce disease incidence the following year. Pruning to improve air flow and reduce leaf wetness periods and fertilizing trees that have been severely impacted will help. Call Shady Lane Expert Tree Care to make recommendations for your trees. Boxwood plants can be infested with all life stages of the box tree moth. In Europe, chemical treatments and biopesticides are available for use on boxwood; however many of these compounds may not currently be registered for use on boxwood or available in Canada. Shady Lane Expert Tree Care will be using B.t. (Bacillus thuringiensis) to control Box Tree Moth larvae. - [Compost Tea](https://shadylanetreecare.com/compost-tea-shady-lane-tree-care/): Compost tea is a fantastic way to reduce the use of high nitrogen and phosphorus-based fertilizers. The overuse of fertilizers can be detrimental to our water table through leaching of nitrogen and phosphorus into our lakes, rivers, and drinking water. Compost tea is a natural solution that can replace the need for fertilizer. It works through a holistic approach, this approach is about creating healthy soil that will feed your trees naturally. Compost tea will create healthy soil by adding the microorganisms and foods the soil needs to cycle properly. Healthy soil creates healthy plants, healthy plants can withstand drought, insect issues, and are less likely to get diseases. Our goal at Shady Lane Expert Tree Care is to provide viable options for tree garden and shrub health in all situations. Compost tea is a great way to ensure we can treat in areas that have high salt use or around water bodies. We make fresh compost tea for every project with specific blends for each application. Our compost tea is made weekly and will allow for the best results possible. Call today to learn more about how we can help your soil and trees. - [Soil Test](https://shadylanetreecare.com/soil-test-tree-care-service/): Soil is everywhere, and we can take the importance of soil for granted at times. It filters our rainwater, it anchors our trees shrubs, flowers, and lawns in place. It allows all plants to grow and thrive in order to produce clean air for us to breathe. We walk, run, play, and garden in soil, but do we understand what healthy soil is and how it works? Let us take a moment to understand how soil cycles, and what this cycling does for soil and trees' health. In a natural setting, the soil would be getting more complex and healthy overtime from the food it is receiving. That's right I said food! Your soil is very much alive and hungry, your soil is teaming with life that is microscopic. This microbial life is what makes your soil work and function to produce nutrients that are available to trees and shrubs. A simple cup of healthy soil will contain billions of bacteria, fungi, and other predator microbes like anthropods, amoebae, nematodes, and protozoa. The bacteria and fungi will help break down organic matter. So what is organic matter? When it relates to trees it is a forest floor or litter layer. When walking through a forest you will see all the leaves, twigs, berries, and fallen trees on the ground slowly decomposing. Just like compost. This layer of organic matter will be broken down by the fungi and bacteria in the soil. This organic matter is the food for the soil. The more diverse and abundant the organic matter is the more diverse and healthy the soil can become. This is called symbiosis, a relationship that is mutually beneficial to the soil and the plants that grow in the soil. The next step is the preditors in the soil, anthropods, amoebae, nematodes, and protozoa to eat the bacteria and fungi. This will produce waste or scat in plant-available forms for the trees and shrubs to enjoy. This entire process of organic matter, bring decomposed into plant-available forms is called a nutrient cycle and utilizes the soil food web. So why don't we have healthy soil in urban settings? The simple fact is that we have removed the soil food web from our urban setting by taking away all the organic matter or forest floor. This is because we have been taught that a beautiful landscape should have a lawn. You cannot grow grass with leaves, twigs, and fallen trees lying around so we clean up all organic matter and shuffle it to the curb or through a wood chipper. Over time the soil becomes hungry and lacks the ability to make plant-available nutrients. So we fertilize to provide simple nutrients that are required to keep trees and shrubs growing. Something that is created in nature for free and in a whole and natural form. Fertilizers can be of great help but we still need to have soil that can cycle to create poor space and retain water for uptake. Unhealthy or dead soil will become compacted and the water will run off instead of absorbing or penetrate the soil. We can assist in tree growth with fertilizer but never completely replace what healthy soil provides our gardens and trees. - [Neighboring Trees](https://shadylanetreecare.com/neighboring-trees/): When working in an urban setting trees can often grow beyond the property line and onto neighboring properties. In many instances the shade and foliage is welcome as long as the tree is not hitting a house or roof line. Other times people can have pools, sun loving plants and gardens or want to have more sun in their house or patio. When dealing with neighboring properties and tree care there are some very important things to consider. - [LDD(Gypsy Moth)](https://shadylanetreecare.com/gypsy-moth/): If you have an LDD(gypsy moth) problem on your trees you probably already know it is not very fun and it can be extremely messy. Let's start with some general information about the problem at hand. LDD is an insect native to Europe and Asia it has been weakening trees across North America. LDD was introduced to North America in the 1860’s near Boston and has spread over the past century. Despite the use of insect predators, as well as fungal and viral controls, LDD populations do occasionally reach outbreak levels and continue to expand their reach. - [Tree By Laws](https://shadylanetreecare.com/tree-by-laws/): Throughout the GTA tree by laws are common to protect trees and the urban forest. So what is a tree bylaw? This means you cannot cut down trees of a certain size on your property without consulting an arborist and getting a permit from the municipality's forestry department. Tree by laws first came into place for construction projects to help stop needless cutting and extensive damage to the remaining trees. Since this time the by law process has been proven to save countless trees on construction sites and neighboring properties. It may surprise you but we often have roots on our trees that extend and grow into the neighboring yards. The addition of pools, decks, patios and driveways would often destroy neighboring tree roots through digging or regrading. The tree by law was so effective in construction that the city of Toronto created a tree by law to protect private trees over 30cm in diameter at breast height. Now many municipalities have adopted a tree by law as trees are imperative to our communities success. The process, fees, and lead times vary by the municipality and will be determined by each tree or site requirements. Shady Lane has a team of dedicated consulting arborists that will help navigate this process with ease. Our office will set up a site visit for a free consultation, an ISA certified arborist will provide a cost for all the work required to get the project moving forward. Often a mandatory replanting is needed, this will entail a detailed planting plan within the report to the city. Planting is important to keep our communities green and cool in the summer months. Your arborist will help you pick a tree that will suit your needs and thrive in the future. Tree by laws can seem like a lot of work but with our expertise it's a breeze and rather fun. We have created a customer service process that is second to none. Our staff can process the permits, remove your tree, grind the stump and plant a new tree making us a full service company. Tree plantings come with a standard 1 year warranty. We love working with your municipality to keep you safe and our communities green. If you're looking at a tree removal process and find the permit process overwhelming, call or email us today for a free consult. - [Vertical Trenching](https://shadylanetreecare.com/vertical-trenching/): Vertical trenching is an incredibly effective way to reduce compaction in you soil and improve the overall health of your soil. Urban landscapes can become compacted or be compacted from existing clay or heavy soils. Soil compaction can be created by something as simple as a heavily trafficked footpath, machinery from construction, or poor soils that are naturally compacted. When you have compacted soil it impacts water penetration, water holding capacity, root penetration, and the soil's ability to cycle nutrients due to a lack of pore space and oxygen. So what does this all mean, for you and your trees? Tree health starts with soil health and if you have compacted and "unhealthy" soils your trees will suffer a similar fate. This is why we love to verticle trench trees that are mature and juvenile alike. We have seen some incredible results with verticle trenching. The process is done through the use of an "air knife" or "air spade". These tools accompanied with a high powered air compressor, have the ability to remove the soil around a tree or shrubs root system without damaging the fibrous roots. This technique allows us to remove old tired soil, add new fresh soil, and significantly reduce compaction. The result is the trees and soil to become more healthy. One of our certified arborists can assess the compaction of your soil and create a plan that will work for you and your trees needs. Verticle trenching is an impressive way to improve your entire site's soil or just address problem areas. Compacted soils are the number one cause for lack of soil and tree health in urban settings. Trees live in hard environments daily and they require water and nutrients for success. Healthy soil can help provide everything they need for that success. - [Hydro Pruning](https://shadylanetreecare.com/hydro-tree-pruning-toronto-gta/): Pruning trees away from hydro lines is commonly thought of as your municipalities or hydro suppliers' responsibility. Often this is accurate, but in some instances, it is the responsibility of the homeowner. Hydro lines that run up the laneway of residential properties in rural areas are actually privately owned. Therefore the tree pruning is the responsibility of the property owner. These lines take a high level of experience and training to work around. In some instances, a hold-off or shut down of the power can be required. Our expert staff and office can coordinate any of these requirements with any hydro provider in your area. These lines can be assessed by our team and we can make the best recommendations for a safe efficient plan of action. Shady Lane has several IHSA certified line clearing arborists on staff, the appropriate bucket trucks, and safety equipment to clear your properties hydro line. - [Tree and shrub planting](https://shadylanetreecare.com/planting-trees-shrubs/): Tree and shrub planting is essential to maintain a great landscape, green communities, and increase property value. When looking at planting a tree there are some very important factors to consider, you want to ensure you are practicing proper plant placement (PPP). Choosing the best tree to meet the site's and clients' needs and expectations. Planting the best tree possible will save time, money, and maintenance needs in the years to come. - [Clipping and Maintaining Cedar Hedges.](https://shadylanetreecare.com/cedar-hedges-clipping-management/): Cedar hedging a great way to provide privacy to any landscape. Cedars are evergreens and hold foliage all year to keep green and provide color to the landscape in the winter months. Cedars can be planted in a row to form a hedge. Cedar trees if left unkept will begin to grow outward in a tree form, this is why clipping to maintain a hedge-like form is very important. If you allow your cedars to grow outward in a tree-like form you will soon start to see through the hedge and begin to lose some of the privacy that is desirable and required. Clipping allows the cedar hedge to contain all growth on the inner portions of the hedgerow keeping a tight and thick look that will provide the best privacy and allow for snow to roll off the hedge with little to no damage in the winter. - [Cable and Bracing of Trees and Shrubs.](https://shadylanetreecare.com/cable-bracing-trees-shrubs/): Our team of Certified Arborists has specialized in the preservation of trees and shrubs for over 45 years.
